Sustainability and Commitment- Some Beginning Thoughts

Commitment is necessary if you want something to be sustainable. It might be commitment to putting “x” in place, so you have “y” or to regularly doing “x” so you have “y”… or someone else taking responsibility and seeing that whatever it is gets done so you have what you need. So, commitment requires an action to something that will allow for something else to happen or be. It is an active sort of thing. It requires focus and devotion of your time.

I am trying to change some things in my life and I am finding myself too easily distracted. I tend to go to extremes I am to involved in something or I just can’t focus. I am making a commitment to work on balancing this more in my life so that I can exist in a healthier more natural and balanced state and not always feel as if I am playing catch up.

I am wanting to learn to code, mainly because this is the most practical path forward for me as I contemplate various elements of my life and goals. It will enable me to find a job making decent money, it definitely has a certain level of creativity, a lot of potential for remote work and so on. I need something easier on my body than waiting tables, or even being a convience store cashier you would totally be surprised how much lifting they do if you never worked in the industry.

Thing is I keep catching myself “blowing time” so tonight I thought I would take a bit to reflect on it and as I was it made think of sustainability… is blowing off time sustainable if you want to change things in your life, learn new skills and so on? Sure, maybe a certain amount of time but it has to be limited you can’t allow yourself to endlessly read the news to see what’s next with the coronavirus or to look at your social feed looking for what? I don’t know we all are really supposed to be social isolating. So, I decided to “catch” my behavior and look at it and see it for what it was and contemplate what to do.

If I want things to be different I need to commit to it or it will never be sustainable. To commit to something implies some sort of action to ensure something is. To follow through with actions that ensure you are creating this something you want is sustainable and is how you finally reach the dreams you are trying to make come true to you. First decide to what you are going to commit… can you sustain it? Is it worth sustaining?/Is it worthy of sustaining? Then how can you take action and commit so that whatever it is becomes sustainable?

In life we often want things, but we are not willing to change our habits or take the steps necessary to make things happen- maybe we are willing but we just don’t see the need so we haven’t yet. When considering our lives and what we really want, we need to ask if it is sustainable, if it is what is the cost of sustaining it, and then we need to commit to doing what it takes that’s empowerment to creating sustainability in our own lives. If you don’t commit to whatever it is, it will never be sustainable.

Can you see how commitment has helped you reach your goals or a lack of it has held you back in your life?
